The Florida department of education awarded the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs $1.5 million to create YMCA READS!, a literacy and mentoring program working in areas with low performing schools or school with higher rates of students testing below grade level in reading, as well as areas with high rates of YMCA READS! seeks to close the gap in students' reading performance and the State of Florida's reading performance expectations. YMCA READS! uses the Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) program. The SIPPS program is a systematic decoding curriculum that helps struggling readers develop word recognition skills and fluency quickly, YMCA READS! also uses AfterSchool KidzLit, which exposes students to a variety of literature that highlights the "big ideas" that are important to their lives. The programs of the YMCA can only be successful with the help of volunteers. Do something good. Volunteer to become a mentor in YMCA READS! It only takes one or two hours per week, but the relationships developed will last a lifetime. Florida Mentoring Partnership - Think, Care, Mentor visit www.flamentoring.org |
